Mid America Pet Food Recalls Single Lot of Dog Food After Salmonella Test
Mid America Pet Food is recalling a single lot of its Victor Super Premium Dog Food because it could be contaminated with salmonella.
In a Sept. 3 news release, Mid America said the food was produced at its Mount Pleasant, Texas, facility. No pet or human illnesses have been linked to the recalled food so far, the company said.
The Victor Super Premium Dog Food, Hi-Pro Plus was sold in 5-pound bags at "various distributors and retailers" across the country. The recalled bags have lot code 1000016385 and best-by date 4/30/2024 written on their backs. Any customers or sellers who have the food should throw it out right away
The South Carolina Department of Agriculture tested the dog food, and a single sample revealed the presence of salmonella, Mid America said.
Salmonella can make both dogs and humans ill. Pets who consume the bacteria may experience vomiting, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), lethargy, fever, decreased appetite, and abdominal pain. They can also infect other animals and humans without showing signs of illness.
Humans can experience similar signs of salmonella poisoning: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal cramping. In rare cases, salmonella exposure can cause eye irritations, arterial infections, arthritis, endocarditis, muscle pain, and urinary tract problems in people.
Those potential ailments are why anyone handling the food should wash their hands thoroughly after throwing it away. Same goes for any surfaces or bowls it touched.
